Old Shanghai and The Yu Garden

Old Shanghai

Nearly 500 years ago, Shanghai built defensive walls around its city center; the walls were knocked down more than 100 years ago, and there is now a circular roadway where the walls once stood.

 

Our tour guide told us not to trust the food...so we settled on a little bit of America.

Yu Garden

Yu Garden was first built in 1559 during the Ming Dynasty by Pan Yunduan as a comfort for his father, the minister Pan En, in his old age.

Yu in Chinese means pleasing and satisfying

First stop Shanghai

The hole in the top of the building is for Feng shui...basically so the dragon can get from the mountains to the water.

The tall building in the back is the Shanghai Tower..the tallest building in China.

When we were young we used to go to a small store called "Lawson" to get Chipped Chopped ham (very thinly cut ham lunch meat)  Julie and I wondered if this might be the same one.

The theme of the trip became the countries bird...the Crane.

The Shanghai Bund has dozens of historical buildings, lining the Huangpu River, that once housed numerous banks and trading houses from the United Kingdom, France, the United States, Italy, Russia, Germany, Japan, the Netherlands, and Belgium, as well as the consulates of Russia and Britain, a newspaper, the Shanghai Club and the Masonic Club.

                         This is what we looked like for most of the trip.
